You can hit local trails or head out to spots like Wardour Castle and Larmer Tree Gardens, as well as dropping into Frome for the famous market that's only on the first Sunday of each month or Shaftesbury for a stroll around the historic centre. Cranborne Chase AONB became the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the country to be designated in its entirety as an International Dark Sky Reserve, becoming the 14th Reserve across the globe, and part of the exclusive club of International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Protected Areas to gain international recognition for its dark skies. You’ll hear the wildlife - owls, deer, foxes and badgers - all around and spot plenty of it (there are binoculars provided) if you’re quiet and patient. Hanging out at the lodge and doing nothing more taxing than baths, board games and BBQs is pretty tempting, but the site is within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest and deserves a little exploring.
Underfloor and electric heating supplement the wood-burner, there’s mains power and masses of hot water, the kitchen has everything you could need and there’s even a washing machine, very useful for longer stays and dealing with your outdoor gear. Outside you'll find three outdoor areas to relax a deck to look up at the stars, a covered outdoor seating area with festoon lights, sheepskin chairs, wood-fired oven and hot tub or just a few steps down from the cabin a sun trap terrace with barbecue and fire pit. Andy and Jane have now moved next door to their dream house that they built and they will occasionally go by on their way to the farm but the two buildings are screened and positioned to give enough privacy for everyone. The lodge is an Echo Living original, (as featured in Channel 4’s Impossible Builds) but rather than being just a design challenge, it was actually owners Andy and Jane’s house for five years, and the love and care that goes into a real home are evident throughout. The distinctive pyramid skylights flood the space with light while blending the building into its surroundings and you can take in the views from either of the two decks. Cows and sheep peer at you over the fence as you drink morning coffee on the patio and watch the sun lift the mist out of the valley to reveal endless rolling hills. Red Kite is a beautiful, relaxing space, designed to sit in perfect harmony with the gentle countryside around it.
